Blogging Tip from the BAR: URL Shortener

URL shortener

We’re in February. Okay, let’s say that again.

We’re in February! Good God! Where did the beginning of 2016 go? Did we write all that we wanted? Has this been the best year yet for blogging? So many questions, so little time. Or rather, too much time being wasted on social media. But that’s for another post.

This week’s Tip:

Use a URL shortener

If you’ve been using any form of social media to promote your posts, you’d know two things:

  1. URLs are long!
  2. They don’t look very good.

While your readers are most interested in reading your content, they are not keen on reading lengthy URLs which will lead them to that spot. Cue the URL shortener. Why should you use it?

  1. They condense the URL into manageable size.
  2. They save you space on platforms like Twitter, so you can insert more relevant text or hash tags in the 140-character limit.
  3. Participating in hash tag parties is so much more fun!

If you blog, you should definitely be following Pro Blogger everywhere on social media. This one‘s one of my favourite posts.

  1. That’s an important tip and I agree on using short URLs for social media. The challenge that I recently faced was with Self Hosted, my twitter URLs are long ones and I don’t know how to condense them so that every time someone shares – they get the short one :/
This post is a reminder that I should research that and fix up the issue. Thank you!
